Is that sunshine peeking through the clouds? Are the birds chirping a little louder? That can only mean one thing: pool opening time is right around the corner! Whether you’re a first-time pool owner or a seasoned backyard lifeguard, getting your pool ready for the season is a rite of spring. At St. Cyr Pool & Spa, we’ve got everything you need for a smooth, sparkling start-so let’s dive into the essentials!
Step 1: The Big Reveal-Uncovering Your Pool
Before you even think about cannonballs, start by clearing off your pool cover. Sweep away leaves and debris with a broom or leaf blower. If there’s water on top, use a cover pump or siphon it off with a hose. Only then should you carefully remove the cover. Trust us, you don’t want last fall’s leaf soup in your pool!
Pro tip: Let the cover dry, then fold and store it away from critters and sunlight.
Step 2: Fill ‘er Up & Gear Check
Over winter, your pool water level likely dropped. Grab your garden hose and fill the pool back to its normal level. While you’re at it, reinstall ladders, handrails, diving boards, and all those fun accessories. Give your pool toys and patio furniture a wipe-down for good measure!
Now’s also the time to:
- Reinstall your pump and filter
- Lubricate O-rings and gaskets
- Check for leaks or worn parts-replace as needed
Step 3: Clean Sweep-Debris Be Gone
Before you even think about chemicals, give your pool a good clean. Use your pool pole, leaf rake, vacuum head, and brush to remove any leaves, dirt, or “mystery objects” that may have found their way in over the winter. A clean pool makes for easier balancing later!5
Step 4: Test, Test, Test!
Water chemistry is the secret sauce to a safe, sparkling pool. Start with test strips or a water test kit to check:
- pH
- Alkalinity
- Calcium hardness
- Chlorine (or sanitizer) levels
If you’re unsure, bring a water sample to St. Cyr Pool & Spa and we’ll test it for you!
Step 5: Chemical Magic-Time to Balance
Here’s what you’ll need to get your pool water just right (all available at St. Cyr!):
- Pool Opening Kit: These handy kits include algaecide, clarifier, pool shock, stain and scale preventer, and test strips-everything bundled for your convenience!
- Extra Pool Shock: If your pool looks more “swamp” than “swim,” you’ll want extra shock to zap the algae.
- Algaecide: Prevents and kills algae before it gets out of hand.
- Clarifier: Helps tiny particles clump together so your filter can catch them.
- Stain & Scale Remover: Protects your pool surfaces from unsightly buildup.
- Sanitizers: Chlorine, salt, or other preferred sanitizers to keep your water germ-free.
Add chemicals according to the instructions and run your pump 24 hours for the first day or two to circulate everything thoroughly. Test and adjust as needed, balance is key!
Step 6: Final Touches-Ready, Set, Swim!
- Backwash your filter to ensure it’s working efficiently.
- Double-check all equipment and fittings for leaks or air bubbles.
- Set out your loungers, umbrellas, and floats-summer is calling!
