Dive into Summer: Why Cleaning (and Replacing) Your Pool or Spa Filter is a Must!

The sun is shining, the pool cover is off, and the only thing standing between you and that first cannonball is a little maintenance magic. At St. Cyr Pool & Spa, we know that nothing ruins a perfect summer day faster than murky water or a sluggish spa. That’s why we’re here to talk about one of the unsung heroes of pool and spa care: your filter.

Let’s break down why cleaning—and sometimes replacing—your cartridge or D.E. Filter at the start of the season is essential for sparkling water and stress-free fun, plus how to know when it’s time to swap in a fresh one.

Why Filter Cleaning is the First Splash of the Season

When you open your pool or spa after a long winter’s nap, it’s not just the water that needs attention. Cleaning or backwashing your filter multiple times is often necessary because winter debris, dead algae, pollen, and other contaminants accumulate and quickly clog the filter as circulation resumes.

This buildup causes the filter pressure to rise rapidly and reduces water flow, so repeated backwashing or cleaning helps remove all the trapped debris until the filter can run efficiently and the water begins to clear. It’s common for the pressure to spike again shortly after each cleaning during the first days, so several rounds may be needed before the system stabilizes and normal maintenance intervals resume.

Giving your filter a thorough cleaning right at opening does more than just boost its performance—it also:

  • Improves water circulation and clarity, keeping that inviting blue hue we all love.
  • Balances water chemistry, making it easier to maintain safe, comfortable swimming conditions.
  • Keeps your pool or spa healthy by trapping bacteria, viruses, and microscopic debris before they can multiply.

Think of your filter as the pool’s immune system. A clean filter means less chance for algae blooms, cloudy water, or even unwanted odors. And who wants to swim in a science experiment?

Which Filter Is Watching Your Water?

Here’s a quick rundown on how to refresh your filter!

Cartridge Filters: Super easy to maintain—just remove, rinse with a hose, and you’re good to go. For extra grime, soak in a cleaner.

D.E. Filters: The gold standard for fine filtration. They need a bit more TLC: backwash, rinse the grids, and add fresh D.E. powder.

Sand Filters: Workhorses for larger pools, but not as fine-tuned as cartridge or D.E. filters. Backwash regularly and replace the sand every 5–7 years.

Ceramic Filters: Rare but mighty in some spas, with a long lifespan and simple maintenance.

When is Cleaning Not Enough? Time to Replace!

Even with the best cleaning routine, every filter has a lifespan. Over time, debris, oils, and chemicals wear down the filter media, making it harder (and sometimes impossible) to get truly clean. Here’s how to know it’s time for a new filter:

  • Age: Cartridge filters usually last 1–2 years in pools, spa filters about 6 months, and sand media up to 5–7 years.
  • Appearance: If your filter is torn, cracked, or the ends are brittle/discolored, it’s time to say goodbye.
  • Performance: If water stays cloudy, the pressure gauge is high, or cleaning just isn’t helping, your filter may be past its prime.
  • Hard to Clean: If debris is stuck deep in the pleats or the filter feels stiff, it’s no longer effective.

Replacing your filter not only keeps your water pristine but also reduces stress on your pump and heater, saving you from bigger repair bills down the line.

Starting the season with a sparkling clean (or brand new) filter sets the stage for months of safe, clear, and carefree swimming or soaking. Whether you have a cartridge, D.E., sand, or ceramic filter, regular cleaning and timely replacement are the keys to pool and spa happiness.
